REPRIMAND FEARLESSLY WITH LOVE

A Gospel Reflection on the 23rd Sunday in Ordinary Time - September 6, 2026

Every community, be it a family, a parish, community, or a village relies on those willing to step forward in love to guide, support, and if necessary, gently redirect those who stray from the path. The Scripture invites us to recognize our pastoral responsibility: not as distant judges, but as shepherds and companions, entrusted with the practical work of building up our brothers and sisters. In the quiet, everyday moments of encouragement and correction, we become instruments of God’s love, helping one another to flourish, just as a well-tended field yields an abundant harvest.

Evil abundantly thrives when good people remain silent. While each of us is given the grace and strength to lovingly guide our brothers and sisters back to the right path, yet too often, we let fear or indifference hold us back. God calls us to act not as bystanders, but as compassionate instruments of change. Our talents and gifts are entrusted to us for a purpose: to help create a kinder, and more just world. Let us use what we have been given with courage and conviction, knowing that small acts of love and correction can transform lives and communities.

Through Baptism, we are anointed as priests, prophets, and kings called to pray, to lead, and to lovingly correct. As prophets, we have a sacred duty to speak the truth, even when it is difficult or unpopular. Like Jeremiah, who faced opposition for his honesty, and Ezekiel, who was urged by God to courageously warn His people, we too are invited to be steadfast and faithful in our call. Our mission is not to condemn, but to help one another grow closer to God. Consequently, we are invited to approach this calling with humility, prayer, and a genuine desire for healing and renewal in our communities.

Above all, let love be the foundation of every correction and every relationship within our communities. Scripture reminds us, "Do not judge, so that you will not be judged." True Christian correction is never about condemnation, but about encouragement and restoration. When we act with love, we lift each other up rather than tear each other down. Therefore, we strive to replace criticism and gossip with understanding, support, and words that inspire growth. In Christ, we are called to build up, not break down.

Correction, when rooted in love, is an act of hope and trust in one another's potential. Every time we notice a mistake or a weakness, we are entrusted with the responsibility to respond with kindness and discretion. Our goal should always be to help the other person become their best self, and not to diminish or embarrass them. The best practice is to offer help privately and respectfully, trusting that gentle guidance can turn stumbling blocks into steppingstones.

God lovingly urges us to help guide those who have lost their way. When we reach out to someone who is struggling, we not only help them, but we strengthen the bonds of our entire community. Just as a village supports and raises a child, so too are we called to support one another in faith. Even a small word of encouragement or correction, given in the right spirit and at the right time, can make all the difference. This idea helps calls us to be attentive and willing to act, knowing that timely kindness can lead a soul back to hope and wholeness.

Lord, grant us the wisdom and courage to guide one another with compassion and humility. Help us to speak the truth in love, to support those who falter, and to accept correction with open hearts. May our words and actions sow peace and unity within our families and communities. Strengthen us to be gentle shepherds, always seeking the good of others, and lead us closer to you, the true source of mercy and understanding. Amen.
