GOD IS MY STRENGTH, I SHALL NOT BE AFRAID

A Gospel Reflection on the 12th Sunday in Ordinary Time - June 21, 2026

Back in high school, our class captain was guided by a deep sense of responsibility and a genuine care for the well-being of our class. Teachers respected his dedication and often trusted him with important tasks, knowing he always acted with integrity. Yet, his commitment to fairness and order sometimes put him at odds with classmates who simply wanted an easier path.

Even when some students tried to ruin his reputation, he responded with quiet strength and understanding. He endured false accusations and teasing, never letting bitterness take root. Instead, he remained true to his values, showing compassion even to those who misunderstood him. Today, that same captain is a respected leader in society. At our recent Old School meeting, it was heartwarming, but not surprising, to see him unanimously elected president of the Alumni Association, the guy we once named “Obstacle”.

Imagine the weight of that rejection, knowing that the very people you care about are hoping you will fail. This is not just Jeremiah’s story; it is an all-too-familiar reality for many of us. Have you ever risked speaking the truth or standing up for what is right, only to find yourself isolated or misunderstood? Prophet Jeremiah’s pain is real and relatable, yet his response is profoundly inspiring. Despite the betrayal, Jeremiah did not let his heart grow bitter or his resolve weaken. He transformed his pain into perseverance and his loneliness into even deeper trust in God. He teaches us that betrayal can break your heart, but it does not have to break your spirit. Instead, it can become the very fire that refines your purpose and strengthens your faith.

Many of us must have had a hard experience that threatened to break us, at work, in our families, or even within our church community. Friends can suddenly see us as rivals, distance themselves, gossip, or even turn against us. Like the psalmist, we may lament, "If an enemy had done this, I would have borne the taunt, but it is you, my friend, who walked along the road with me, hand in hand and shared my bread with me." But it is exactly in these moments of heartbreak that we are called to rise above, to let our setbacks strengthen our resolve and deepen our faith.

Why do people turn against those they once loved or respected? Often, it is because standing for righteousness and truth makes others uncomfortable. Doing what is right exposes what is wrong, and not everyone welcomes the light. Jeremiah preached repentance and warned of consequences, and for this he was hated and labeled a "prophet of doom." But Jeremiah’s courage reminds us: stand up for what is right, even when it costs you. Your integrity is your strength.

Never abandon the truth or righteous deeds, even if you are mocked or rejected for them. Remember: one person with God is stronger than any crowd. As the Gospel assures us: "Fear no one. So do not be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows. Everyone who acknowledges me before others I will acknowledge before my heavenly Father." Attacks and trials are part of the journey, but faith makes us unbreakable. Stand tall, be steadfast, and trust that God stands with you. Those who persist in faith win a victory that lasts forever.

Do not let the fear of mockery or isolation silence your faith. Every time you choose to stand up for your beliefs, whether it is a silent prayer at your desk, receiving Holy Communion with reverence, or attending Mass despite what others may think—you declare that your faith matters more than fleeting approval. The world needs visible witnesses of hope and conviction. Your courage will not only strengthen you but may be the spark that ignites faith in those around you. Remember, great change often begins with the quiet bravery of one person. Every act of faith, no matter how small, sends ripples of inspiration into the world, proving that the light within you is stronger than any shadow of doubt or fear.

If you know the truth, live it boldly and unapologetically. You have been entrusted with a great calling, embrace it with confidence and conviction. Do not waste your energy worrying about the opinions or judgments of others. Scripture assures us: God is always by your side. “Even though I walk in the dark valley, I fear no evil” (Psalm 23). “Blessed are you when they persecute you and insult you… rejoice and be glad, for your reward will be great in heaven” (Mt 5). Stand unshakable, like Mount Zion, firm, courageous, and unwavering. With God as your strength, you are unstoppable. Let your life proclaim your faith with every action. The world needs your light. Shine it without fear.

Heavenly Father, we thank You for the gift of faith and the strength to stand for truth and righteousness, even in the face of adversity. Grant us courage to acknowledge You before others and remain steadfast when we are misunderstood or opposed. May Your Spirit guide and strengthen us, so that we may always trust in Your loving presence and protection. Help us to persevere in doing good, confident that You will never abandon those who hope in You. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
